Heritage in Calhetaa

In Calheta you can find the following assets, which depicts its history, its past, present and what the future may bring.

Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse – 14 meters high, this was opened in 1922 and is the westernmost tip of the island of Madeira in Ponta da Vigia. In 1989, this was electrified with the energy of the public and then in 1999, the Regional Government classifies it as Heritage Site Value. And in 2001, it built up a small museum with several exhibits on the headlights of Madeira, containing photographs and documentation of the origin of these important monuments to the history of Madeira.

Museum Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse – a space that hosts several photographs, documentation and exhibition on the assignment of the Madeira region. This is attached to the Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse which was classified as heritage Cultural Value since 2001 since then concentrates the history of the most important monuments of the Madeira Archipelago. It is open Monday to Friday from 9.30 to 12.30 and from 14.00 to 16.30 and closed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Mills of Calheta – one of the oldest cane sugar mills on the island of Madeira, the Society of Mills of Calheta was created during the industrial development in the second cycle of sugar, between the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century . This is produced a quality rum, once a year, after the Holy Week, but its machinery and factory are open all year to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday from 9h00 to 18h00 and end-of-week and holidays from 10h00 to 19h00, ending on Monday.

School Farm dos Prazeres – an agricultural area, with gardens of herbs and exotic animals, it was inaugurated in 2000, to increase awareness and appreciation of the countryside, protecting both species of flora and fauna, through activities related to nature and environment as the Feast of the Blessing of the Animals, in January, the Auction Party Roosters in June, the Feast of the show’s Threshing Wheat in July and the Feast of Sidra in September.

Arts Centre “House of Seedlings” – developed by architect Paulo David, this has been internationally awarded for its architecture and landscaping, as a venue for exhibitions, musical performances, plays and conferences, this is on the hill overlooking the village Calheta. Recently it opened a new space that functions as gallery. This aims to raise awareness of the arts, especially contemporary arts, promoting their learning. This is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 to 18.00, closing on Monday.

Atouguia Church – built by order of John the Baptist Teixeira in 1783, this is currently the headquarters of the parish church of Atouguia the parish, established in 1960 in honor of the patron St. John the Baptist. It contains the only relic of John Paul II, in Portugal, under the altar is a tombstone guarding a box in which are three white hair of this, with the Vatican’s authenticity certification. This has thus become a major attraction poles in religious tours.

St. Peter’s Church – rebuilt the chapel of St. Peter in 1960, this mannerist building consists of a single nave and two side chapels. Stand out inside the altarpieces of the twentieth century, with a great cultural value, which ranked as Concelhio Property Value. The celebration of its patron Saint Peter is celebrated on 29 June.

Church of the Holy Spirit – the late fifteenth century, it was classified as a Public Interest, as it preserves a valuable artistic treasures, religious and architectural. A manufactory and Mannerist style building was completely rebuilt in 1693. Inside there is the Renaissance holy water font, the tabernacle carved in ebony wood, offered by King Manuel I the Fortunate, Manueline processional cross and the chancel ceiling and the central nave in Moorish style. This three are celebrated festivities, the patron of his Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, the Blessed Sacrament and the Feast of Our Lady of Good Ways, the last Sunday of September. The church is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10h00 to 13h00 and from 15h00 to 18h00, ending on Monday.
