Heritage in Ponta do Sol

A landscape of breathtaking, Ponta do Sol stands with a heritage full of beauty and potential, attracting both those who appreciate art, architectural elements, such as culture and traditions that lived.

Palace Lugar de Baixo – with a romantic style and surrounded by a natural landscape, this is one of the most important examples of the architectural heritage of the Madeira Archipelago. Also known as the Palace of Zinos, this has an attached chapel and date back to the nineteenth century. This villa is presented with four meeting rooms spread over three floors, with great technical conditions that allow the organization of meetings, conferences, workshops, exhibitions and parties, already abroad is an outdoor patio with a view of the Marina and the Lugar de Baixo lagoon and can also hosts social events.

Chapel of St. Sebastian – the first references of this date back to 1597, has undergone changes and renovations in the seventeenth century, the Municipality of Ponta do Sol, sent rebuild and its last restoration was completed in the sixties of the twentieth century. This chapel contains a simple line, which highlights the front arch portal full arquitravado Mannerist regional stiff sing and the altarpiece contains three medallions in gilt and decorated with stylized angels.

Church of Our Lady of Light – built in the fifteenth century, this presents a Manueline architecture and neo-mannerist. In the year 1708, the facade of this was rebuilt so that it could move the body of the mother, entered this one Mannerist portal. This church welcomes valuable religious ornaments in silver, lying on out in the chancel ceiling in Spanish-Arabian style, as the font in green ceramic, the Spanish city of Seville, the taste MUDEJAR, which according to some, this is a unique example in the country and was offered by king Manuel, so these are the highlights of this church.

Cultural Centre John Dos Passos – in honor of Portuguese descent writer John Dos Passos, this space features exhibition halls, a library and an auditorium. This project took off in celebration of the centenary of the birth of John Dos Passos, in which the Madeira Regional Government acquired Maria Amalia Pitta Telles house in 2000. This space dedicated a permanent exhibition room, two museum spaces and the library to the writer. This is open Monday to Friday from 9h00 to 12h30 and from 14h00 to 17h00 and closed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
