Mata Nacional do Urso
In an extension of more than six thousand hectares, this goes from Pedrógão the Leirosa, being an extension of the Leiria Pine Forest, this forest area consists of pine trees, which were planted for centuries aimed at the protection of the dunes and that the timber was used for the construction of caravels, which consequently were the essential elements for the discovery of the New World, at the hands of the Portuguese.
Legend has it that the name comes from the struggle of King Dinis with a bear, present an image in a painted altarpiece of Queen St. Elizabeth church in the city of Coimbra.
